The Sixth Form at Malton School attracts highly motivated students from a wide area, not just Malton, Norton and Ryedale and we pride ourselves on making the transition from Year 11 to Sixth Form as smooth as possible, integrating students quickly, valuing each student as an individual, and giving them a firm foundation for future success.
Students are happy here. They have strong working relations with staff, whilst sparking off each other in a way that draws the best out of everyone. The teaching is excellent and students perform well, many moving onto the best universities. Our vocational courses also have a fantastic track record, leading directly into employment or apprenticeships through our links with local employers.
We are committed to the provision of varied, engaging and stimulating teaching and learning in every class, together with a wide range of extra-curricular activities that will enhance students’ education and give them the platform for future success.
Whatever your background, we are confident that the Sixth Form at Malton School will give you a caring, supportive and challenging environment to inspire you to be the best you can be.
The most important aspect for a student in choosing a sixth form will be the quality of the teaching they receive. At Malton we have a highly experienced team of A Level and BTEC teachers who know their subject specialisms and courses and know what has to be done to maximise success. Their depth of subject knowledge, combined with the love of their specialism often rubs off on the students and inspires their desire to learn more. A continuous cycle of training and sharing of best practice with colleagues in the Red Kite Teaching School Alliance, ensures forward looking approaches to teaching are mixed with our traditional ethos to secure the best provision for students.
Our iPad for Learning Scheme has been a powerful mechanism for enhancing rates of progress. Every sixth form student has their own iPad which they use as a powerful research and presentational tool, developing independent study skills.
Staff expect and believe that their students will achieve to the best of their ability. They work with them in a partnership approach to secure the best rates of progress and highest academic outcomes.
first class facilities
Malton has some first-class facilities: 8 specialist science labs; a technology suite with CadCam, 3D printer and laser cutter equipment; 2 food rooms, superbly equipped to develop cookery as a life skill, with close links to the Malton Food Festival; a warren of studio spaces in Art, running between the two main classrooms, reflecting the feel and aspiration of a university department, and a superb dance and drama studio that doubles as a lecture theatre and performance space for evening events.
We have the best indoor and outdoor sporting facilities in the district. Our Sports Centre includes a fantastic climbing wall, full-sized floodlit 3G astro-turf pitch and athletics track.
Sixth Formers have a dedicated room for private study and access to the library with quiet study areas. Wireless internet is available in the newly extended Common Room, where sixth form students have their own staffed canteen. There is also a private sixth form garden.
science and maths specialisms
Our specialism in Science and Mathematics attracts large numbers of students who wish to benefit from our expertise in Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Maths and Further Maths, as well as Psychology and Health & Social care. The School has 8 specialist science laboratories, 4 accompanying prep rooms, excellent teaching staff and a strong team of science technicians and teaching assistants.
We have an extended day every Thursday in which the final lesson is devoted purely to wider personal development and character education: each student chooses a different activity each term from a wide-ranging choice that includes the Duke of Edinburgh Award, debating, alternative conversational languages, charity work and options to take some subjects beyond the A Level curriculum. Students are encouraged to build a wider personal portfolio or enhanced CV to improve their future prospects. We know that success isn’t always gained through a set of excellent qualifications and so the rounded, personal development and character education of every student is a high priority.
a firm foundation for future success
The most important measure of any sixth form is the proportion of its students that move on to their chosen next career step. This is our prime focus at Malton. We recognise that our young people are on a journey from GCSE study to moving out into the adult world in just two short years. Our task is to equip them with a firm foundation for future success.
The vast majority of our sixth form students move on to university, many choosing to attend “Russell Group” universities. Others choose to go straight into employment or look for higher level apprenticeships. Whatever the career aim of an individual student, our offer of excellent teaching skills, a strong personal development programme and the best in pastoral care and guidance provides the platform they need to launch onto the next phase of their lives.
